Step back in time and enjoy Monterey’s historic treasures and beautiful springtime gardens. The Friends of the Monterey Public Library (a 501(c)3 non-profit organization) is presenting a special docent-guided Monterey House & Garden Tour of eight historic homes and gardens on Sunday, May 15, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 (cash or check only) and are available in advance at the Help Desk at the Monterey Public Library, 625 Pacific Street, Monterey, (831) 646-5601, or on the day of the tour in the foyer of the library. All proceeds will benefit the Monterey Public Library ( Attendees should wear comfortable shoes and be aware that some houses are not wheelchair accessible. Parking is limited and carpooling is recommended. No interior photographs are permitted.

The Monterey House & Garden Tour features beautiful historic private homes and gardens typically not open to the public. It also includes special tours of the Cooper Molera Adobe and Heritage Garden, Stevenson House, and La Mirada Museum of Art (where Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton stayed while filming “The Sand Piper”).

The Monterey Public Library is the largest public library on the Monterey Peninsula, with an extensive collection of books, magazines, newspapers, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, Web services, microforms and unique historical collections. The Library is a progressive, dynamic organization with a long tradition of innovative programming and a diverse range of community services. The Monterey Public Library is California's first public library, established in 1849. An average of a thousand people of all ages visit the Library each day, and over half a million books (including e-books) were checked out last year. The Library's vision is to "inspire, delight and educate all" - the Library IDEA!

As a department of the City, the Monterey Public Library is supported but there are always special needs that aren’t met with public funding alone. To address these needs, a group of community leaders came together to form the Friends of the Monterey Public Library. The mission of the Friends of the Monterey Public Library is to support the Library’s Board of Trustees in obtaining its goals and objectives and accomplishing its mission. In particular, the Friends of the Monterey Public Library work to fulfill the goal of community involvement. A major objective for the Friends of the Monterey Public Library is to raise funds which can be utilized to supplement basic, existing library services. The Friends of the Monterey Public Library support and strengthen this very special library. In today's increasingly complex society, libraries are more important than ever.
