Arts Habitat will present Jeffrey Becom, photographer, at Arts in Progress (AIP) on Tuesday, March 26, in a presentation entitled, "Journeys of Discovery: My Life in Art". AIP takes place the fourth Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. This month AIP moves to a new venue, the Museum of Monterey, 5 Customs House Plaza, Monterey. The event is open to the public, the admission fee is $5 and complimentary refreshments are served. The first and last half hours are devoted to socializing and community building.
Jeffrey Becom will catalog his varied passions, color, architecture, travel, anthropology, archaeology, history and symbolism; as expressed through his multiple artistic mediums of photography, painting, writing and design. Over a span of four decades, these inspirations have combined to inform and enhance his life and vision. Becom's journeys of discovery continue to refine his singular focus: painted vernacular architecture around the globe.

Jeffrey Becom comes to his art as a photographer and painter with formal training as an architect. For him these three pursuits ignite one passion: painted walls. Traditional painted façades of vernacular architecture around the globe offer him subject and palette from which to derive his own artwork while he, in turn, documents the innate brilliance of the cultures he studies. "Paint and, specifically, color," explains Becom, "has become my life's calling, whether I photograph, paint, or write books about painted color customs, myths and meanings."

A dozen years pursuing painted color in the lands bordering the Mediterranean Sea led to his first book, Mediterranean Color, and a PBS/BBC documentary entitled For the Colors, A Journey Through Italy. These projects were followed by a decade's explorations into lesser-known corners south of the U.S. border. The images and interviews from these travels were collected in the award-winning book Maya Color: The Painted Villages of Mesoamerica, co-authored with his partner, Sally Aberg. Becom is currently investigating traditional architectural color across India and throughout the Andean villages of South America.
