Arts Habitat will present Terri DeBono and Steve Rosen of Mac and Ava Productions, filmmakers at Arts in Progress (AIP) on Tuesday, June 25, in a presentation entitled, "Shaping the Elephant". AIP takes place the fourth Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. This month AIP will again take place at the Museum of Monterey, 5 Customs House Plaza, Monterey. The event is open to the public, the admission fee is $5 and complimentary refreshments are served. The first and last half hours are devoted to socializing and community building. A sculptor was once asked, "How do you manage to carve an elephant out of a block of marble?" He replied, "You chisel away everything that isn't the elephant".
That old adage applies to documentary filmmaking as well.

Monterey's Terri DeBono and Steve Rosen, AKA Mac And Ava Motion Pictures, will present excerpts of several of their award-winning documentaries and discuss the challenges of independent documentary filmmaking in a digital-media age that is saturated with unreal "reality". Steve Rosen, director, cameraman and editor, graduated from UCLA's Film Department and pursued graduate studies in cinematography and ethnographic film. Born in Los Altos, California, his early work includes filming the landmark documentary Huelga, featuring the march from Delano to Sacramento with Caesar Chavez. The U.S. Senate screened his DDT-Knowing It Survives Us while drafting legislation to ban the use of DDT in this country.

Terri DeBono has co-directed, produced and written independent films since co-founding Mac + Ava Motion Pictures. Born and raised in Oklahoma, she holds an MFA from UCLA in Theatre Arts with a specialization in directing. She has produced numerous plays and films, notably the Mac And Ava produced feature-length anthology of John Steinbeck short stories, Three by Steinbeck.

Since founding Mac + Ava Motion Pictures in 1987, filmmakers Terri DeBono and Steve Rosen have produced dozens of notable award-winning documentaries from 10 minutes to 88 minutes in length, as well as dramatic films and commercials.

Boyhood Shadows, which screens on PBS this July, presented nationally by KQED, joins their other acclaimed social-issue documentaries.

Feature Documentaries aired nationally on PBS
