Arts Habitat will present John Hudson, blacksmith, at Arts in Progress (AIP) on Tuesday, August 27, in a presentation entitled, "Decorative Ironwork: A Little History and How It's Done". AIP takes place the fourth Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The event takes place at the Museum of Monterey, 5 Customs House Plaza, Monterey. AIP is open to the public, the admission fee is $5 and complimentary refreshments are served. The first and last half hours are devoted to socializing and community building. Born in 1935 and raised in Carmel, John Hudson graduated from the University of California Berkeley in 1958 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He served 3 years in the Navy as an engineering duty officer in conversion and new construction of ships. John worked in Los Angeles in manufacturing and as a quality assurance manager. In 1968 he traveled to Ireland and set up a small company to manufacture diamond abrasive tools. In 1971 John wanted to return to Carmel but needed to find a way to make a living besides engineering. He had the opportunity to work for a firm in Switzerland manufacturing decorative iron work one step above an apprentice. John returned to Carmel in 1972 and set up shop in his father's garage where he had blacksmithed as a hobby.

In 1974 John had the opportunity to move to his present location and expanded facility and continues to manufacture decorative iron work specializing in gates, tables, hardware, light fixtures, and just about anything that can be made of steel and other metals.
