Join us! Festive September 26 event will recognize Dan Albert, Sunny McCauley and Fred Meurer. Dan Albert, Sunny McCauley and Fred Meurer – three of the key individuals who helped make the First Night Monterey community arts celebration possible 23 years ago – will be honored at this year’s “Just the Ticket” gala on Saturday, September 26 at the Monterey Marriott. The trio of “First Supporters” were instrumental in launching the First Night tradition in Monterey County as a way for people of all ages to come together through the arts on New Year’s Eve in an alcohol-free environment. As mayor of Monterey, Dan Albert gave significant support so the first celebration could happen on December 21, 1993. Fred Meurer facilitated municipal support during his many years Monterey’s city manager. And Sunny McCauley played an invaluable role as the first volunteer to step forward for the fledgling nonprofit organization. She continues to volunteer for First Night.

“Without their belief in First Night Monterey, and their willingness to contribute their time, money and enthusiasm, First Night would never have gotten off the ground,” said Executive Director Ellen Martin. “Because of their belief in the potential of First Night, we’ve touched tens of thousands of local residents and visitors who have been part of First Night celebrations over the years.”
Gala “Just the Ticket” festivities will include dinner and wine tasting, along with silent and live auctions with vacation trips, original artwork, culinary delights and one-of-a kind experiences. Ticket sales and auction proceeds will help support year-round First Night Monterey activities, including its ArtWorks! outreach program. Tickets are available online at

First Night originated in Boston in the Bicentennial and has spread to cities across North America – including Monterey.

The mission of the nonprofit First Night Monterey is to unite the community in all its diversity through the visual and performing arts, and to engage people’s creativity in the annual alcohol-free New Year’s celebration in downtown Monterey as well as through year-round arts workshops and events.
