Looking for a little telekinetic power and zealous religion in your musical theatre? The Western Stage at Hartnell College continues its 42nd repertory season this summer with the explosive story and powerful songs of Carrie: The Musical. Based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King, the musical forges an unusual link between page and stage, showing that a horror classic can make great theatre.
Titular character Carrie White's story has been around since horror master Stephen King penned his 1974 novel about a bullied teenage outcast. Because it seared itself into the psyche of its original audience, the book inspired several film adaptations as well as a stage musical. Those familiar with the novel will surely remember the disturbing climax – while those new to the story will be stunned.
Carrie: The Musical tells the story of Carrie, a high school outcast. When she isn't being ostracized, she's relentlessly mocked and harassed by her classmates. Things aren't much better at home, where she lives with an oppressively religious mother who has an extremist sense of guilt and atonement. This is an important story to tell, especially in view of the equally disturbing current environment of bullying "the other."
Desperately trying to fit in at school, Carrie is constantly tormented, even though popular girl Sue is increasingly troubled by what's going on. Meanwhile, Carrie finds her strange inner powers growing as she enters womanhood. When the bullies at school take their sadistic pranks one step too far, she turns her frightening abilities on them.
